Mandopop: New Pants (新裤子)

New Pants is a chinese band from Beijing started back in 1996, with a sound that was originally harder (punk even) but then more and more turned to "soft" rock/pop even synth sounds, with lots of really nice harmonies and a inviting song from Peng Lei.

Mandopop: Queen Sea Big Shark (后海大鲨鱼)

Queen Sea Big Shark is an indie band from Beijing founded in 2004 that makes a music that mixes rock, pop and synth in a way that most of all reminds me of the new romance wave of the 80s in Europe. They themselves say they are a live band.

Mandopop: Chopstick Brothers (筷子兄弟) - Little Apple (Xiao Pingo/小蘋果)

"Little Apple" will probably be one of the biggest chinese-sung viral hits of 2014, from the comedy duo Chopstick Brothers. The refrain is about loving his little apple (which has language connotations to do with the forbidden fruit theme in the video). For some other example of their production, see their (english subbed) Old Boys or the more serious "Father".
update: yes, they was indeed the no 1 hit in China 2014. In July 2015 they released the follow up, Little Fruit. I actually think this will be quite successful too.

Movie: One Night Surprise (一夜惊喜)

There is nothing unique about the story or cinematics in One Night Surprise, the production values is like any high-end Hollywood production, and the story is a well told but familiar one about a girl who wakes up pregnant and she has to figure out which of three candidates it is. But. The movie is Chinese, with super star Fan Bingbing in the lead role (and Asian-American Daniel Henney as one of the male leads) and the polished surroundings is not from the usual New York, but city-hubs like Shanghai and Beijing. This is part of a rising prescence of asian movies on the world scene, which is now beginning to affect even Hollywood. With 1,3 billion Chinese just in China, and a growing economy, the potential for movie productions is of course big and the number of high-cost movies per year is increasing quickly.
