Ukrainian pop: Svitlana Loboda - Down With Love (К Чёрту Любовь)

Eastern european rock often is rather sexual which can become a bit tedious when it done on routine, and even though I believe Svitlana could go easy on the lip-expansion, the video "Down With Love" does a great number of combining sexual tension with violence, making the borderline between sex not as clear as it normally is. As a fantasy it is surprisingly sublime and reminds me of Anna Sedokova's Between Us and "Heart In Bandages" in that the video creatively evolves inside its discourse.

Ukrainian pop: Kazaky - Milk-Choc

Kazaky, the Ukrainian danc/pop group with obvoius gay undertones did another excellent music video last summer, this one on the 80s theme, and it was obvious how well their stylized look and sound suited this.

Ukrainian pop: Time & Glass (Время и Стекло)

The duo Time & Glass from Ukraine consists of singer Alex Zavgorodniy and Nadia Dorofeeva, and they have made a number of visual videos where the Name 505 is clearly the best with its catchy sound synced with a flow of mesmeric images and scenes passing by.

Ukrainian pop: Vitaly Kozlovsky (Виталий Козловский)

Vitaly is actually a journalist, but it is as a singer he has been known. From the videos it is obvious he has a nice body and is more than willing to show it off, thereby nicely continuing a tradition often and mostly upheld by women in music videos from the russian language cultural sphere. What makes him worth noticing a little extra is the twisted irony of the new "Spending", which makes fun of the effects of spending money without caution.

  • Vitaly Kozlovsky - Spending (Трачу)
  • Vitaly Kozlovsky - Be Strong (Будь сильнее)
  • Vitaly Kozlovsky and Julia Dumanskaya - Mystery (Тайна)
  • Vitaly Kozlovsky & Varda - Do not leave me (Не оставляй меня)
  • Vitaly Kozlovsky and Varda - Dance (Потанцуй)

Ukrainian pop: Kazaky

What probably strikes you when watching one of the videos of the ukrainian electropop group Kazaky is of course their looks and dancing which very obviously connects to gay-culture, something which they seems to do fantastically and they has gathered fame from this (among other things, featuring prominently in one of Britney Spear's videos...). Watch their funny parody of airport control intimacy or their high heels in "Love". I suggest you start with "Touch Me" and then watch the new "Strange Moves".

Ukrainian pop: Anna Sedokova - Heart in Bandages (Сердце в бинтах)

For the first time ever, I recommend anyone visiting my blog to actually first watch another video as a starter. You should start with Anna Sedokova's video "Between Us", which is about a relationship where the idea is of a positive relationship. Then you watch this "Heart in Bandages" which for all purposes is something so unusual in pop as a tie-in to an earlier video. Here the partner spurns Anna who dont want to let go and therefore is abused again and again in a very visual way. The recording used lots of blood and fake body parts, and may be quite explicit at times, but I think depicts how many may feel at the end of relationship.
