Mandopop: Wang Lin - I am a singer (我是歌手)

Some of my chinese friends won't like it when I say this, but this video is a very typical chinese video - cheezy, overloaded kitsch...and very charming. Wang Lin has been one of my favorite KTV (karaoke music) singers for a while, she has this semi-nerdy charm that really makes you love all of it.

Jpop: Bed In (ベッド・イン)

This odd band with the name Beddo In (which comes directly from the english words "bed in", and which in Japan means to seduce someone and/or get them into bed) at first glance be easy to dismiss as a kind of bad taste version of the idol bands that use scantily clad young girls. But below the surface they are actually more than that. The first obvious thing is that the two female singers is obviously "overage" for this genre where you're usually ripe when over 25. The second thing is that their songs is actually quite interesting, and one of the girls even play an instrument when live. No, this another typical example of the Japanese taking something established and then turning it on its head or more extreme. This is basically Bad taste done good.

Mandopop: Jeannie Hsieh - To Be Mature (要發達)

To be honest - the new song from Jeannie Hsieh is a hot mess. Her "Sister" was a much better track. But what a fascinating video. Its like a golden celebration of slightly off bad taste. Like someone trying to make something both luxurios and stylish at the same time. As someone says in the comments - this is the style of Jeannie Hsieh, whether you like it or not. I like it. ;-)

This is kpop as it should be, sexy and tasteful without any ridicolous bad jokes! Go Pa Hul Za, I know you got it in you to be the next super Idol! (^_^)
