Kpop: Crayon Pop - Uh ee (어이 / Hey!)

After their viral hit "Bar Bar Bar" last summer, the nerdy dancers of Crayon Pop makes their real return on Fool's Day (of course!) with their new offer "Uh ee" (really pronounced like "Hey!"), and it is again a video full of fun and unique dance moves. As they take their ideas from a different pool than most kpop groups (sexy/serious), they have a fantastic range of fun things they can pull off, and they go all out in that, indeed. "Dance on one leg","nerdy foot and hip translation", "dancing with guns", and more moves a cant even imagine names for are there. The video is a nonstop parade of stuff to laugh or learn. The music is a suitable trot meets techno dance that, even though not as good as their best songs, I still think is a little better than Bar Bar Bar. Welcome back, fantastic five!

Kpop: Crayon Pop - Lonely Christmas (꾸리스마스)

Crayon Pop has finally released the next real video after their super success Bar Bar Bar, and obviously it would be hard to repeat their success so they (their record company) has gone for the safe option and trying to do a Christmas "Bar Bar Bar v2.0". WHich off doesn't work, at least for me. Its mostly "Yeah I still like them, but _meh_ an lost opportunity. I feel at every step of their career their company and promoters has just fumbled away Crayon Pop's real potential. It feels like they are like nice girls who's naivety has gotten them in bad company (in both senses). Also, the success with Bar Bar Bar seems to mean they have to appear with those helmets wherever they go, but does it really need to be so one-dimensional? Yep, I'm whining a little, but if you follow Crayon Pop up to Bar Bar Bar you can see that it is not a question of a fan not liking "their" group becoming popular with everyone, but a real worry they may lose the character that took them there from the start.

When I was going to do a top 10 of best kpop of the first quarter of 2013 I actually found so many good songs and videos that I had to expand it to 20, and to add that the early winter season had also been excellent. Think of my dismay when the next months has been one disappointing comeback after another. All my favorite female groups has with a few exceptions done meager efforts both with the videos, but more important with the songs, the exception being Sistar and a few more. This makes the comeback of Crayon Pop, my favorite rookie group of 2012, even more thankful, as its a real super single. All their videos have been well choreographed with a uniquely funny and playful style, and with catchy songs they really deliver. That this dance is the best to date is then even more impressive. Even though the "military marching/cheerleader" refrain may not be appreciated by all, this will certainly be on 2013 top 10 for me!
Update: the song has actually become more and more popular, and now we even see parodies of it appearing! Great! ^_^
