Jpop: Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Problem Girl (Mondai Girl / もんだいガール)

Last year gave us a kind of farewell song from Kyary Pamyu Pamyu with "Yume no Hajima Rin Rin" followed by "Family Party" and "Kira Kira Killer" which to be honest didn't to seem to be that different from before. This year she starts off with "Mondai Girl", which is the theme song for the rather successful TV series "Mondai no Aru Restaurant". Mondai means 'problem' and the restuarant is a restuarant with Many Problems...anyway, the video sees her both in her classic whimsical and colorful costumes but also a kind of futuristic goth/emo girl.

Jpop Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Family Party(ファミリーパーティー)

Colorful and eccentric, and oh so charming and popular especially in her homeland Japan, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's latest treat to us is the theme song for the movie of one of her favorite characters, Crayon Shin-chan. The song is named "Family Theme" and sees her fighting it out in some kind of futuristic Tennis/Fighting game with a paper box robot.

Each new video of the Japanese music and fashion icon Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is often met with the expectations of wired, garish and fashinating settings, but the new "Yume no Hajima Rin Rin" (roughly "the dream of ring beginning") is surprisingly (for her) understated and a bit melancholy as it is about growing up and farewells. As this is the time between the asian New Year and the cherry blossoms, it is a very suitable theme, but one cannot wonder if the use of old costumes also is a sign of Kyary signalling that her future releases will be in a whole new direction?
